Coffee House Spotlight: Catalina Coffee Company, Redondo Beach, California

By Geo Ong

I feel like the luckiest person alive.

Last week I entered the Catalina Coffee Company for the very first time. I ordered a giant soy latte at the bar and sat in just about the coziest armchair this side of the Pacific. As I waited for my latte, I was able to take in the surroundings and realised that it felt like I was sitting in the study of the Cluedo board game except thankfully no one is to be murdered. Or at least no one is to be caught.

Just as well—here comes my latte. As I wait for it to cool down a bit, I’ll finish describing the Catalina Coffee Company. With no real reason (but lots of rhyme), the small space is filled with a collection of antique-looking armchairs, love seats, and sofas. Surrounding the different seating options are of course coffee tables and side tables. The walls are lined with tall bookcases filled with used mystery books (Cluedo again), and the entire coffeehouse is lit only by table-side lamps. The dimness adds to the overall coziness of the establishment, where you can have breakfast, lunch, or just a cuppa, by yourself, with a friend, or with a book. Join me, won’t you? (I’m unarmed, I promise.)
